#303: Kubuntu Jaunty unusable with VIA Chrome9

I've got a laptop with VIA Chrome9. Kubuntu 9.04 (KDE 4.2.2) always
crashed after login. But this was fixed with NoAccel option.
The performance is terrible. Even scrolling a web page with Firefox takes
what seems to be forever. Glxgears gives 50FPS. Videos are unplayable. The
system is virtually unusable.
Is there any way to speed it up?
