Indeed the performance are terrible if you disable 2D acceleration. I
think the crash you are seeing is fixed in trunk with changeset 696. You
should file a bug in Ubuntu asking for a backport of just this fix or an
update to a more recent svn snapshot.
You're not providing much information to diagnose the problem (xorg log,
xorg conf, driver version you are using, etc...). However, I'm confident
what you are seeing is fixed already, so I close the bug. Feel free to re-
open if moving to svn trunk doesn't fix the problem for you.
