I have the same motherboard ASUS K8V-VM, and I haven't got any problems
with my graphics.
Recently I tried to boot Ubuntu 9.04 livecd, and all works perfectly. I
use CRT monitor. I have BIOS revision 401.
Make sure that your Ubuntu is not beta.
Try to reset BIOS to default values and update your BIOS to the latest
revision (BIOS upgrade is very dangerous, so do it on your own risk):

Try remove extension cards and try again (the openchrome driver often
interfere with WIFI).
