There's some problem in DXLink - has to do with the handshaking between the
server and the client. The server (dxui) hangs in select waiting for info
from the client - the startupui. When you kill startupui the select
releases, it prints an error message and gets on with its business. I
think the select also times out in some cases, so if you wait it out, the
UI eventually is OK.   I was looking into it when my workstation blew up;
I'll get back to it when I can unless someone figures it out first.

Subject: [opendx-dev] IRIX - startupui

Chris had reported problems with my 4.1.0 SGI binaries that when he
used the DX Startup Window, he could not Edit Visual Programs or run
samples from it. At the time I could not duplicate the problem. Now that
I have 4.1.1 running, I am experiencing a a similar problem. Everything
works fine if I start the VPE from the command line (dx -edit). If I
use the startupui, and select New Visual Programs, then I get the
"Unable to connect to dxexec" message and

DXLink Error: Connection to DX broken
Can not determine server version number!

in my terminal window. After a slight delay, the VPE does come up and is
actually connected to the server.

If I select Edit Visual Program, then I get the same messages and after
about a minute a blank VPE. One time while waiting I hit the DX
Startup's Quit button and the VPE contained my program. In either case, I
can load a program into the VPE and everything runs fine.

I have not even started looking into this yet and figured I would ask for
suggestions first.

Does this sound similar to what you were experiencing Chris?
