Hello List,

I want to say a big thank you to everyone whom responded to my RFC regarding a pricing model for Openfiler.

There were some incredibly in-depth and to the point responses. Some even took it upon themselves to design a complete price list that would suit all levels of user. Now that's dedication!

Some of the commentary went completely off-topic and into areas which I'd not anticipated. But I suppose that should be expected in any public forum. The upshot of the deviation is that I was able to garner a lot of information about how and where the project was lacking and how it could be improved from an Open Source project standpoint.

Yes we'd pushed out the code; but we have not seriously engaged the community and user-base and potential developer base to try to further the project in the true spirit of Open Source development. Not due to lack of enthusiasm - but more a result of insufficient resources to deal with everything at once.

Over the next few months I'm going to try to change that.

It's not going to be easy but judging from some of the posts to this list and the developers list, I see great potential for a thriving developer community to build upon the work which was started by and has been sponsored by Xinit Systems thus far. The key ideas are in place so, as the Chemical Brothers said, we need to Galvanize.

The plan has been to decouple Openfiler from Xinit Systems and build a self-sustaining project. This plan is progressing quite rapidly and should be complete within the next 4-6 weeks. In the meantime, if you have any comments you wish to make - or have a desire to make a contribution to the project, please email this list, the developer list, or use the forums.

Further to the subject of this email, I recently had a communique from a nice chap at rpath (http://www.rpath.com). They have an incredibly interesting Linux platform that I'm currently considering as a migration path for Openfiler in the very near (can u say 2.5?) future.

2.0 coming soon to a [CD | DVD]-ROM drive near you. Keep the bug reports flowing.
