Having fixed addresses may work (without conflicts) for IPv6, but not 
for v4 - I have 10.*, 192.168.* and 172.16.* addresses in use on my 
development machine, to connect to multiple (local and remote) networks.

However, I do not see the benefit in using IP to talk to a USB-connected 
device. If it was a real ethernet device, then IP would be great, but 
for USB, what is the benefit?
