I'm not sure whether bit bang io on it will be very good or not, may need to run the jtag interface through an fpga, although that does complicated coding, not to mention firmware updates.
I've also got a custom board I designed for work, it's primary purpose is as a usb analog video capture device, but it's based on an lpc3131 (arm9, 180mhz, High speed USB, quite cheap) and an actel a3p060 fpga. I don't have enough pins from the fpga wired out to a header to easily using it for this, but I could rip off the analog converter chip and tap into it's pins to give me plenty of fpga free pins. I've been thinking of having a go at this, akin to simonqian's post from a few of days ago. I don't have any off chip ram however, so I'm not going to be using linux - but it comes with a rather large set of example firmware for bare metal coding (which I used for the vdeo converter), and there's nuttx is available for it which would give me an tcp stack to play with etc. Off the top of my head, I reckon a fully built version of this board (once design is customised to suit this purpose) could be sold for $150 - $200 - as such I'm far more inclined to use a carambola! I like the idea of making it a usb network device, hadn't thought of that one earlier.
