Well, depends on the card. Thanks to extensions they might.

But in any case: you can still go oldschool and read the values back to main 
memory and draw them to the screen instead of clear. You would have to write a 
new background that can handle the depth buffer, or use a shader to draw both 
of 
them at the same time with a PolygonBackground. But if you're worried about 1.4 
shaders are probably not an option. ;)
