I know I've read stuff about asynchronous pixel data transfers, in 
exensions like vertex/pixel/texture buffer objects.

I think one of the points of those extensions are to allow you to do 
background transfers of pixel data (together with fences/render queries) 
while the GPU is rendering something else.

I haven't used them myself though, as there hasn't been any need.. yet.
