You are certainly free to fork if you want to - personally I think it is a fairly silly reason to fork, and doubt you will find enough people to support a fork for that reason alone. Especially since I am fairly certain that there is at least one client that will let you set what you want the defaults to be and then set them that way when you create a prim. If that is no longer true, you can also create a prim, set the permissions and then simply drag copy it anytime you need a new prim to build something. Or you can make a prim building tool which creates a prim and sizes and aligns it when you click on it - easy enough to do. There a plenty of options to get what you want without changing the way that thousands of people are used to it working...
