Version 0.6 of the OpenSocial spec added the ability to query a container to determine which features and profile fields it supports. This functionality should be in the data APIs when they are released. However, there currently isn't a data API specification, so you can't start designing to implement it yet. We're working hard to get a spec out and will announce it here when it is ready.
