This is caused by the fact that GNU tar is not creating POSIX compliant 
archives.

If you are looking for a 'real' tar that is able to deal with the non-standard
GNU archives, I recommend star.

If you like to see this feature with /usr/bin/tar, I see the following option:

Star has already been aproved for integration into the Solaris base code, this
aprovement is more than a year old and only needs to be made reality.

While the star integration has ben discussed, there has also been a discussion 
about the possibiltiy to let star later replace /usr/bin/tar. This may need
further discussion and star will in future be 100% compatible to Sun tar with 
the  exception of bugs (e.g. the broken internal ZFS ACL format that appeared 
recently).
