I was expecting to see a "complete" development SDK
with all needed
bits to use OpenGL on Solaris x86...

do I get this
right that NVIDIA has a runtime OpenGL environment
delivered for Solaris
x86 but not a development set of libraries ? So if you
want to develop
on Solaris x86/64 right now what can you do ?

Did you try developer.nvidia.com? And/or Nvidia's
Solaris/Unix forums?

Stefan,

You can get Nvidia's SDK which has tons of reference
material.

You can get the mesalibs-6.5 package (i.e. Mesa 3D) in
which I included GLUT and the mesa lib binaries to
give you everything you need to start doing OpenGL
projects - and you also get OpenGL 1.5 compatibility
support (see http://www.blastwave.org/testing for the
packages).

ATI also has a nice OpenGL reference library and SDK.

If you want hardware accelerated OpenGL graphics then
you can pick Nvidia workstation products and use
Nvidia's device drivers.

Otherwise, you can pick the mesalib binaries and use
any graphics card you want for software rendering (at
the moment, DRI forthcoming). XiG's Accelerated-X
Summit series is another option for OpenGL 1.4
support.

There is also JavaGL and Java3D:
https://java3d.dev.java.net which is supported.
