I'm especially interested in this comment, though:

"Few community champions that people can follow and learn from"

What do you mean? What types of community champions are you looking for? And how many? I ask because I actually think we have many. We clearly have a leadership models that is distributed, though, so that reduces the emphasis on any one or two or even a few people.

Leaders who are enigmatic, energetic and natural people magnets. Quite often
you'll get a whole following not just because of the technology, but because of
the great people behind it. I'm not saying that we don't have any, just expect
people to come of the woodwork over the next couple of years that will boost the
project more than any single technology could [obviously, in my very humble
opinion of how I've seen things across other communities].

I agree. And I'm always looking forward to new people coming from the woodwork in various areas. I think we have many great leaders now, but there is always room for more. And there is always room to increase the profile of these people, too. I enjoy talking about this aspect of the community, actually. In fact, I have four slides of community photos in my preso that I use to illustrate points about the OpenSolaris community: http://blogs.sun.com/jimgris/page/opensolaris Huge apologies to those I missed. I try to keep these slides and pics as diverse as possible. Keep postings pics to flickr and tag "opensolaris" and I'll keep cycling through. :)
