But there *is* a distinction. Solaris !=
OpenSolaris, and vice versa.

if "Sun's Solaris" is based on OpenSolaris,
meaning it is Sun's distribution of OpenSolaris,
what is the distinction?

Ignoring the fact that OpenSolaris is not a distro,
and Solaris is, a version of Solaris that includes
OpenSolaris bits has not been released yet. There
*are* developer snapshots (aka SX and friends) of
what may become the next version of Solaris, but
those are supersets of what is on OpenSolaris,
which is where you get the "based on" qualifier.

The distro called "Sun Solaris" is made up of a bunch
of components. Until the advent of OpenSolaris, most
were closed. Now, some of them are open (ala the
OpenSolaris ON stuff), some are are from other open
places (Java, SFW, GNOME) and still others are not
(the so called "closed bits").

Today, the production-level distro you get when you ask
for "Solaris" (i.e., Solaris8, 9, 10, 10u1, etc) is made
up of bits that are mostly closed. This is primarily
because they predate the OpenSolaris effort. The S10
update releases (S10u1, S10u2...) have more features
that have been backported from OpenSolaris, but they
themselves are not "based on" the bits in OpenSolaris.
Of Sun's offerings, only the Solaris Express developer
snapshots are truly OpenSolaris based distros.

At this point, anyone else can make their own distro out
of the OpenSolaris bits. The common point between the
OpenSolaris based distros today seems to be that the ON
component is the same across the board, while most
everything else is different. AND THIS IS OK!

*That* is the distinction.

this balkanization of distros will affect things.
