Were Solaris to install flawlessly on a system, I'd say that if you've not experienced any Unix or Linux (or unix like system) that they'd probbly both seem quite foreign. Both operating systems have good guides to work with them. The one thing I might say, though, is that the Linux crowd -- at least in Australia -- have a bigger user group following so getting community based (and relatively free) hobbyist support for Linux is much easier than for an OpenSolaris based distribution.
