I do agree that no security updates are a big problem if someone found a zero day vulnerability in Firefox you could have a big problem. You can kind of solve this problem by having the critical software you need compiled by hand and just download a newer version when you need the extra security or feel a need for a better version. Or have a 3rd party publisher/repository that has most of the updated software you need. Such as all the Gnu tools, and free software updates that are available for other Gnu/linux distro's anyway. That way if you need say a newer version of Firefox you add that publisher to your list and away you go. I think that in reality people who have used Gnu/Linux have come to expect the freedoms that Open Source Software has granted them. Once they get the taste they like the results and telling them they can't have it is really not a good option. I think a few people are waiting to see if Oracle will even issue another express edition after Solaris 11 hits. Some get the felling that this is a beta test for Solaris 11 and that seeing another express edition might be wishful thinking. So far I haven't seen anything definite to say this is not the case.
