The problem is not that it is hard to configure the network in Solaris; the problem is that Solaris hardware support is not as broad as that of linux, i.e. linux supports more devices out-of-the-box. I've just run into a similar problem with the Marvell Yukon GB NICs on my Asus P5K WS mobo - they are not recognised during the initial install and I needed to download a driver from the Marvell site and install it post-install.
