The good news is that I had the same problem installing to vmware workstation 
6.5.  I thought it was vmware at first but other vms work fine.  I think snv_98 
is just frigged up.  It errored in so many different ways for me.  Freezing 
here, not booting there, logging out while installing, desktop disappearing, 
error box with no error popping up...   meanwhile I was using an ubuntu vm 
smoothly.  The iso checksum worked out so it wasn't corrupt.
