This is an awesome link for how to create a bootable ZFS root mirror in Indiana 
OpenSolaris 2008.05, which is what I think you're trying to do:

It works like a charm. If one hard drive goes bad, you can just boot up from 
the other one without having to mess around, and that's pretty much how I set 
up my ZFS mirrored software RAID configuration. Later on I shrunk the size of 
my windows partition on a third drive so that I could format the rest of the 
empty space on that third drive as a Solaris partition and then I had ZFS 
mirror my data on three drives (just because I'm extra paranoid). But doing 
that was more involved and would be the topic of another discussion thread.

Try out the method in the link I posted and keep us updated on how well it 
works.
