Try using the laptop to install OpenSolaris 2008.05 build 86 (dash one update) 
on a USB stick first to check how well it works. Then after you're comfortable 
with it for a while, try downloading a newer preview build of 2008.11 and 
running that from a live CD and installing it on a USB stick.

You have to be very careful when using "pkg image-update" to upgrade from build 
86 to a later build because you can lose your grub if you don't follow the 
procedures at this link below:

and take a quick refresher on bugs #1334 and #1559. I think the only major bug 
I can think of that might affect the cheaper Toshiba Laptops is that it might 
hang when you turn on Compiz because of something that's going on with the 
Intel i915 chipset that is in some of those laptops. I'm not sure if the bug 
was fixed or not, but I just thought I'd give you a heads up.
