I'd give 2008.11 RC2 a try.

I installed it on my 512 MB RAM Acer Aspire 3000 and it works fine.

On the first boot after install, give it a little time, because it's doing
the initial SMF import, but works fine after that.

Great to see that the SFE driver is included these days!
