Hi again,

I've actually made some progress running OpenSolaris on my HP 6735s. Now I'm
having problem with Xorg lagging. It feels really slow and it's eating a lot of
CPU. The mouse pointer moves pretty smoothly, but moving or resizing windows
are a pain. It feels like I'm on a remote desktop on a 56k modem. There must be
something wrong and I'm hoping you can help me work it out.

If it's any help, here's the story so far...

I didn't get any further with 2008.11, however only a day later 2009.06 was
released (to my pleasant surprise). I didn't hesitate to download and try this
release instead, and guess what... it booted straight into the live-cd (didn't
even stop to think). A moment of joy! =)

Determined to get OpenSolaris running, I went straight to the installer (no way
to learn like the hard way, right?). Installing was pleasingly simple, however
I ran into problems when trying to log in after the reboot. Like I do when I'm
installing Windows, I left password blank when I created my user. It turned out
to be a bad idea since blank passwords are not allowed by GDM (I've read about
this but, a real show-stopper for newbies). I had to learn how to boot into
single-user mode and set a password for my user. Luckily, that was pretty
simple.

When OpenSolaris finally let me in, I started the Device Driver Utility to
check if I had any driver issues. Unfortunately, drivers were missing for two
devices, both my network cards (wired and wireless). The wired card is from
Marvell Technology Group and the Device Driver Utility pointed me to some
driver called myk. I didn't know how to get that one installed. Instead I
followed step 8 of this blog post:
http://weblogs.java.net/blog/bleonard/archive/2008/05/_opensolaris_20.html

Note that I don't have the same device as this guy (mine is 11ab, 4357).
However, the Yukon driver seems to work fine (I used a newer version that I
found on the Marvell website and I never). I never did the update_drv part
described in the blog post. The version I installed requested a reboot and
after that I had network connectivity and decent speed. =)

I haven't bothered with the wireless (Broadcom: 14e4, 4315) since I have no
need for it right now. That's about all I have done. Played around a little
with Gnome and installed OpenOffice.

Now I want to get rid of the lagging. I've imagined OpenSolaris being a quick
and responsive OS. Is that wrong?

Thanks to everyone how has read this far. I really appreciate any help!

/ Mikael
