OK , there's been a fair bit of confusion because of the subject line.

1) The comment/question was w/ regard to  OpenSolaris 2008.05, NOT snv_86_rc3.

2) The grub menu installed w/ OS 2008.05 was the source of the "snv_86_rc3" 
misidentification.

Thanks to all for their help.  I downloaded the nfo driver  binary package from:

http://trisk.acm.jhu.edu/SFE/SFEnicdrv/

and I'm now happily running OpenSolaris 2008.05 which has the distinction of 
being the only  one of 3 OS releases that I could get working in 3 days of 
aggravation.  Both Solaris 10 U5 and Fedora 9 failed miserably for differing 
reasons.

As several people have pointed out there's an intrinsic tension between the QC 
we expect of Solaris and having things appear to work from the start

FWIW the laptop in question is a Presario F767NR.
