Ok, I've now tried Solaris 10, SXCE, and SXDE (all most current release).

I'm trying to install on a Compaq Proliant ML370 (Generation I) with a
SmartArray 221 RAID Controller. When I finally get to the installation screen,
I select CD/DVD media, click next, and then after about half a minute get "No
disks found. Check to make sure disks are cabled and powered up. Press OK to
Exit." Now, I know that all of the disks are fine - I just wiped openSuSE off
to put Solaris on. They're all spinning, and a Ubuntu liveCD (I know, but it
was the only liveCD I had around) sees them fine.

I made compaq's driver diskettes as per SP14291. I've never installed Solaris
before, let alone with third party drivers. I went through the add drivers menu
option, loaded each disk and pressed "f" in succession, but nothing. Also, the
readme file with the disks is for Solaris 8, so I can't really follow the
instructions.

Any tips? Any help... please?

The readme (Solaris 8) is as follows:
a. Boot Solaris with Configuration Assistant Diskette or with
    Solaris 8 Software 1 of 2 CD.
b. When the Configuration Assistant screen is displayed, choose the
    F4 option (F4_Add Driver)
c. When the 'Install Supplemental Drivers' screen is displayed,
remove the Configuration Assistant diskette (if it is used to
Boot Solaris) and insert the CPQncr8.360 Driver Update diskette.
d. Press F2_Continue.
e. At this stage, the cpqncr driver is loaded from the diskette into
    the memory.
f. You can also add other drivers through the corresponding DU
diskettes at this stage. Once all the required drivers are added,
remove the DU diskette from the diskette drive and reinsert the
Configuration Assistant diskette (if it is used to Boot Solaris)
    and press F4_Done.
g. The Identified Device Drivers screen is displayed.
h. Press F2_Continue. Continue with the installation process of
    Solaris Operating System.
i. At the end, the installation program prompts you to insert the
    CPQncr8.360 DU diskette again.
j. Reinsert the CPQncr8.360 DU diskette.
k. Press Enter to continue.
l. Following messages will be displayed on the console.
