The blastwave VLC media player is badly broken. However, there is a VLC media player that works with all versions of Solaris from Solaris 10 onwards... Up until a few weeks ago, there was an IPS repository at this web site:
http://www.lifewithsolaris.jp/ run by this genius Japanese programmer where you could download 100% working OpenSolaris builds of VLC Media Player, as well as XINE video player, Goggles DVD Player, BMPx Media Player, Music Brainz picard, and much more. This is THE WEB SITE where me and everyone else in the OpenSolaris community downloaded all of our multimedia software from in 2008. Unfortunately, some lawyers sent a threatening legal e-mail to the Japanese programmer who owns the site and he shut down his IPS repository, and he never posted instructions or details on what the modifications were that he made to the source code of all these projects to make them work in every version of Solaris from Solaris 10 up through OpenSolaris 2008.11 THE ATTACK ON THIS SITE SHOULD BE A BIG WAKE UP CALL FOR EVERYONE IN THE SOLARIS COMMUNITY!!!! We really need to have some kind of official OpenSolaris VLC web site ( maybe www.solarisvlc.org ?) with a forum and a source code repository where we can share resources, source code and information. If one genius programmer working alone in his basement in Japan solves all the problems of multimedia in Solaris but doesn't share his code with the rest of the community, then all of the rest of us are doomed as soon as that one brilliant programmer drops out of sight and stops allowing us to download files from his IPS repository. This is why we need to focus on sharing source code and not pre-compiled binary implementations of things (the Gentoo and BSD guys are masters at doing this). Now we all have to waste months of our free time trying to re-do all of this work from scratch and re-solve all of these problems that have already been solved all because we don't know what the modifications were that he made to all of these multimedia packages to make them work. -- This message posted from opensolaris.org
