Fair enough. It was only because things did not seem to be working properly
that I mentioned the new messages in my original post.

Yep, my subsequent rebooting with the NV19 installation disk and still seeing
the same disk label problem led me to that conclusion. But, as error messages
go, "permission denied" is a fairly strange one to see when you're running as
root, and not very informative either!

Yep. My experience so far is:

First try: Graphical install; deleted existing Solaris fdisk partition and
re-created it to claim more space that I freed up from my WinXP (hack, cough)
partition. I then did a custom format to lay my slices out. End result:
installation worked but the disk label was weird.

Second try: Booted into Knoppix, DD'd zeros all over Solaris fdisk partition,
then deleted it completely. Then ran a desktop text install, during which I
created the Solaris fdisk partition, and then did a custom format to lay my
slices out. (very simple layout - slice 0 is 1GB swap, slice 1 is 4GB root).
End result: installation worked, and the disk label is fine.

So, from that limited experience, my guess is either the disk label problem is
associated with the graphical install, or it's a random problem which just
happened to clobber me on the first try. I'll be installing another machine in
the next day or so, and I'll post a quick followup to say whether the graphical
installation had problems on that box too.

Thanks for the info,
     Jason =:^)
