Snorbert ... I've had the same experience on a Whitebox P-4 Celeron PC with
standard ATA drives.

After a graphics installation (which worked perfectly) I now cannot add another
(say slice 6) area.

bash-3.00# format
Searching for disks...done

AVAILABLE DISK SELECTIONS:
       0. c0d0 <drive type unknown>
          /[EMAIL PROTECTED],0/[EMAIL PROTECTED],1/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/[EMAIL
PROTECTED],0
       1. c0d1 <DEFAULT cyl 11990 alt 2 hd 32 sec 63>
          /[EMAIL PROTECTED],0/[EMAIL PROTECTED],1/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/[EMAIL
PROTECTED],0

I've tried a 512 byte dd to overwrite the label, but that wasn't successful.

I will be forced to try your method of NOT using the graphical installation
method.

Cheers

PS: This machine hosted Solaris 10 03/05 before OpenSolaris, which worked fine.
