hm, all good info, thanks. yeah actually in my case i saw the 8000 error because after the boot failed, I tried to boot from grub manually with "kernel" instead of "kernel$" ... right now my only other boxes for reference are Solaris 10 releases.
Yeah I've backed up my data from this server and have no problem wiping it all out. I'm wondering where the old data is lurking, though. perhaps I should do fdisk again to re-do the x86-level partitioning as Solaris. take off, nuke from orbit, etc. ah ok, I can go that way...I usually install from text/console.
