I can share with you how I got there and what you're going to run into... I still having "issues" that I'm currentlyworking out. They are a little more advanced that just a basic install... Those issues are more along the lines of living in a networked multi-platform environment. I am "learning" to work those issues out.
I have 4GB RAM. Most of the modern Windows OS'es (Win7 and Vista- XP is an exception, but is dead-ending) say they require a minimum of 1GB of RAM. You can do it with less (such as 512MB), but it swaps to disk and performance is REALLY slow. I know Ubuntu and OpenSolaris will run with less, but it "really" runs great with MORE. A RAM upgrade would be "great" but you shouldn't "require" it for a native install. It would just run better if you did. Installing it into VirtualBox, you would need more memory. You need the minimum memory of your base OS, plus the memory of your Virtual machine. If you allocated the whole 512MB to your Virtual Machine, VirtualBox itself would most likely be swapping to disk most of the time... and it would seem like your system was locked up... I experienced this "playing" with VirtualBox on my laptop, where I installed OpenSolaris 2008 in VirtialBox when It had 1GB RAM and tried to allocated the whole memory to the virtual machine. I reallocated the memory back to 512MB and evrything went fine. (I later upgraded that Laptop to 2GB's). IMPORTANT- Before you install... What is your experience level and yopur hardware? You might want to be familiar with programs such as GParted before you start... I have multiple hardisks on my PC, with a Winows Partition and a "another_OS" partions on each drive. The reason for this is that Windows OS'es like to be in the lower portion of the partion table for it to work right. The "another_OS' is where I installed OS'es such as OpenSolaris. With me, before I added a Solaris Partiton, it wanted to partition the WHOLE drive. When I added a Solaris Partiton, it let me pick that partition to install. My wifi card and ethernet devices were supported. Check on the OpenSolaris hardware compatibity list to see if your hardware is... Mine installed correctly during the installation, although the driver for my onboard network controller was a little generic... I'm in the process of updating that driver. None-the-less, It autoconfigures and connects to an available network (mine). It also shows me all the available networks that my wifi card is in range of.... (Like my neighbors!) I'll leave this post with that for now, unless you want more info or want details on something... -- This message posted from opensolaris.org _______________________________________________ opensolaris-help mailing list opensolaris-help@opensolaris.org
