I don't know specifically about the Xserve, but I know a few tricks that
have worked on other systems:

1- Try using an external USB optical drive instead.
(I don't know if there's any kind of EFI configuration utility...)
(Maybe try changing the optical drive from AHCI to Legacy mode....)
2- Try downloading the latest (b134) iso instead of the 2009.06 iso.
3- Try downloading the 2009.06 iso instead of the latest (b134) iso.
4- Try solaris 10 instead of opensolaris
5- And all the various other incantations ... freebsd, nexenta, etc.

Um ... Try installing something like Citrix Xenserver, or VMWare ESXi, and
then osol into a single VM that occupies the whole set of hardware.

FWIW, I know that sol10 is supported on ESXi, while osol is not. So you
might want to check the compatibility list for whatever virtualization
platform you have.

I don't think you can call it either hardware or software. I think you can
only call it "compatibility."
