I've done some dtracing and noticed the static/scratchy sound appeared immediately after pidgin played a sound (for someone logging in). Pidgin uses these two devices to play a sound: /dev/mixer /dev/sound/audiohd:0dsp Next, I'll keep pidgin muted for a few days and see if the problem still persists. These apps also do audio but they use these devices: /dev/audio /dev/audioctl firefbox-bin (opens many times, perhaps upon each web page visit that contains flash?) Xorg for bells in terminal windows? Opens many times. mixer_applet2 Opened once at Gnome startup. acroread This one is surprising but I guess it can "speak" documents now VirtualBox Upon a guest startup
