I don't see how perl or autoconf affects the ability to roll shared libraries.
We build a large (10E6 lines) product from 20+ libraries each in their own
directory, and there are two "roll" stages in the process, in which previously
built libraries are bundled into amalgamated shared and unshared libraries.
The directory structure and configuration system don't affect the ease of
doing these "roll" operations. It does require an intermediate install
directory where the individual libs get put before being rolled, but that's
no drama.
