nailed a bit more:
problem is somewhere between r44301 and r44346

CHAOS CALMER (Bleeding Edge, r44301)

08:06:15 up 5 min, load average: 0.51, 0.59, 0.28
root@router:~# uname -a
Linux router 3.14.30 #2 SMP Thu Mar 12 02:11:09 WET 2015 mips GNU/Linux
44301 works perfectly but 44346 does not. will try to bissec this a bit
more.
