Does basic IO operations fit that bill?

I believe any application area will need IO handling on the file format level, 
also groundwater problems (unless you plan to create grid files and property 
fields manually one byte at the time). An alternative is of course to make one 
new repository for each format one wants to support, but I don't think that is 
a good idea.
