it is very simple: (i know, you like simple solutions ;o) )
you can do anything, practicing artistic freedom, as long as you add a
small legend, your explanation of your own symbols.
symbols are a matter of taste. they also should be logical of course.
if the explanation is missing, or if you know, you are diagramming for
conservative folders, it is necessary indeed, to use the common style.
