The most direct answer (but maybe it's a copout!) would be to use whichever
one is clearest in a given situation. But I think this issue is less
important if the diagram is accompanied by explanatory text; indeed this
sort of dilemma is a good argument for redundancy between the diagrams and
the text. I've been leaning towards more text recently in my own
diagramming, and I think my diagrams are more understandable as a result.
YMMV of course.
