Chris, You are correct that the oscar included PVM doesn't have xpvm built. I guess I should add that to the todo list.
As far as removing other distro-provided RPMS...the main rub is if they're installed. If they are simply in the '/tftpboot/rpm' dir, the package selection code in oscar should be smart enough to figure out which is the newest (typically one shipped w/ oscar). The main issues as best I recall are LAM/MPI and PVM b/c they are shipped with RedHat as well as OSCAR. (These are the only two off the top of my head there may be one or two others.)
