You are correct that the oscar included PVM doesn't have xpvm built.  
I guess I should add that to the todo list.

As far as removing other distro-provided RPMS...the main rub is if they're 
installed.  If they are simply in the '/tftpboot/rpm' dir, the package
selection code in oscar should be smart enough to figure out which is the
newest (typically one shipped w/ oscar).

The main issues as best I recall are LAM/MPI and PVM b/c they are shipped
with RedHat as well as OSCAR.  (These are the only two off the top of my 
head there may be one or two others.) Otherwise any specific problems should 
be mentioned in the "release notes".
