Hi Vincent, Bernard and OSCAR friends.

Excuse me if this has already been resolved - Africa had to go to sleep in the middle of it...

Ok so then I think we have found a problem. When I install Linux (Redhat a
couple years ago and now Mandrake), I always decline to make graphical mode the
default boot level. When the system boots I get a text login, and I normally
login in under a user account and then "startx". That's standard right? And
it seems odd that OSCAR does not support that. And the only way I know how to
change it is to reinstall Mandrake Linux. Or if it is as simple as changing
the run level in one of the start up scripts then maybe I can do that.
This is wierd, because I do exactly what Vincent did (on a RH9 box) - boot into init 3, log in as user, startx, "su -", run install_oscar. This never gave me any hassles at all. I've never tried a Mandrake install, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was due to that.

And can you please comment on the "mkstemp" and "rsync error" messages I have
been asking about? Do any of the following suggestions that I have received
address that?
These errors come from a failed rsync connection. Do you get a error 23 - partial transfer - or something ? Probably it's a symptom of the fact that you either put in the wrong password or it timed out or something. At least, that's my experience with rsync.

* cexec mount /home (tried that - already mounted)
* fix ~/.ssh permissions (~/.ssh is u+rx and all files readable)
cool
* create user accounts and push them with OPIUM (doesn't ./install_cluster do
that?)
this can only happen in the post_install scripts, since the nodes won't have an OS yet.

* change the default boot level to graphical mode (reinstalling Linux?)
You can change this by editing the startup scripts. Not sure how to do that with Mandrake...

If reinstalling Linux with graphical mode as the default boot level will fix my problem then I will do it. Should I do it? And should I switch from Mandrake 9.0 to Redhat 9.0 if that will make things smoother?
I've had very few problems with RH9, except for the fact that it's no longer supported, but the point is that you may have found a bug in the Mandrake installation, which I think should be fixed. Just my 5c.

Good luck !
Bruce
