hhm, thinking about it, i fail to see why you want to release 6.0.4 first.
AFAICT this bug prevents the successfull installation of a cluster (at 
least for me it does). what use is a "stable" version 6.0.4, if you cant 
complete a cluster install?

(i may be missing the point)

perhaps a workaround to the sync_file problem can be applied in the 
meantime. something which would allow step 7 to run, without exposing the 
bugs in sync_file.

the other issue with the incomplete removal of nodes is probably less 
pressing, as not everybody will be removing nodes...

what do you think?
