red1,

correction, foss is not an antithesis of economics though foss is certainly
an anti-thesis of american capitalism / imperialism (citing the simile by
azrul).

appreciate if you can replace the phrase anti-thesis of economics to
anti-thesis of american capitalism / colonial imperialism in slide 9

in economics, foss is considered most similar to the concept of the commons
(one of the earliest english writing on economics, at that point still a
political field of study, is on this commons). a lot of public services like
healthcare, education, street lighting, forestry at some extent fall into
this subject.

a good read is ibn khaldun's concept of social cohesion which dates back to
the 14th century. rafe should read on this topic.

however, your observations on the problems are correct. it is very difficult
to put a price to something that is free (how does one price the air that we
breathe ?) and also address the problem of free-riders (consume but do not
contribute).

the problem is not with grants (as lots of grants finance foss projects
around the world) but the criteria for a ROI (return on investment) which is
very hard to price in money terms.

unlike industrial economics where wealth correlates positively with
production (and with it goes proprietary protection of production),
knowledge flourishes with consumption (as in the case of academic work
citation). the original authors of the academic work do not get any money
for being cited, but there is no denying that these works that are most
cited advances the particular field of study.

foss is certainly viable and is a thriving symbiosis of industry and
community. however, ROI is not the right measure of viability / feasibility
for foss projects or anything public commons good. if we had used ROI in all
our decisions, malaysia will not have had klcc twin towers, putrajaya,
proton, taman negara, oscc, felda, public hospitals, public schools, etc
