Why is every discussion about language / compilers / ide ends up a bit
heated?

To start Adobe is making a great product and I think most of us love it. If
not, just use ajax or whatsoever... No one says you HAVE to use it. That
being said it doesn't mean there is not room for improvement. All
improvements Nicholas added to Haxe are great and I love to see them in some
form in actionscript as well sometime.

Arguing they (Adobe) are so damn slow in developing the language is not fair
in my opnion and is not really true. At least if you compare it to the only
other wide adopted client side alternative: Javascript / Ajax. When was the
latest update to javascript in the browsers? Well ok true, that depends on
the browser I guess, but change is overall way slower than the flash plugin.

Adobe are making efforts to open source a lot of stuff which is really great
and I personally think they can take as long as they want to do it. If they
take long it would harm their own business though, so it wouldn't be
smart... (Silverlight will push innovation speed which is nice for us) And
if the community can help innovating the open source part off the flash /
flex software off course adobe would be served. But they are pulling the
strings and that's fine by me. If they however would make rotten choices in
the future then none tells me to stick with them. But I have a feeling flash
is more alive than ever, and it will be for some time to come :)

Furthermore it is said that they don't have to adhere to standards. I
disagree here as I think I see the direction they are heading. Giving away
tamarin to mozilla has a lot to do with it. I believe that a complete
compatible ecma engine used in the flash plugin as on the browser makes a
strong team. Still we have exploder vs standards complinant browsers, but if
the engine is the same in flash plugin and firefox that would mean one
dialect less to learn. Also, if they would have abandoned the standards,
giving a non standards engine to mozilla is making no sense as they wouldn't
use it, right? Firefox is all about standards.... So I really think that
adobe is making careful choices. Teaming up with mozilla (against the
Microsoft mess ?) is a good strategic choice in my opinion. Remember they
are making the the development team of tamarin way bigger with this
action!!!

OK Nicholas, give it to me! Haxe probably gives one for all, right? One
language for all incompatible ecma engines? ;-)

I'm sorry I didn't try it (as I heard) powerful language yet but im into
flex a lot, so sticking with as3 seems the way to go for now ...

Damn that was the longest mail I ever posted to a mailinglist!

Sorry about that... Take care,

Arnoud (who is not working for Adobe :))
