Ah ok, so it's not the "out-of-source"ness that broke it, it's not
doing an install. Got it.
actually, to be pedantic, it's both the out-of-source, and the not-
doing-and-install. if you build in-tree, it's ok, if you build
(anywhere) and install it's ok, but if you expressly build out-of-
source and don't install, problems.
this patch fixes that set.
