Because that's what the modeler intends for the scene?  Otherwise why
they have added it?

IMO our loaded should try and load the models and replicate what was
intended by the modeler.  Teams should coordinate between engineers
and modelers to make sure the art is appropriate for the needs of the
project i.e. as team you should decide whether you want light sources
or not, it shouldn't be an API like the OSG to decide this for you.

Now if you have models coming in which you have no control over then
you may want to override elements of it, lighting might just be one
aspect of this, disabling one particular element by default is not
really appropriate.

I'm with Roland on this, if you have the scratch it itch go add the
option and submit it.
