Anyhow, I think that an easier and more "unix-y" way is to make a wrapper script calling xrandr or whatever your distro supports to change the resolution before starting your application and then change it back. That has also the advantage that should your app crash, it will not leave the screen in a messed up state - a way too common issue that could be a major problem if you are working on a system where the primary screen can deal only with certain resolutions/refresh rates (projectors, HMDs ...)
