I'm using gcc-4.1.3 under Kubuntu with NVidia drivers, and certainly don't see any threading problems. I have used lots of versions of gcc and Nvidia drivers and haven't seen problems like the ones you are experiencing. I think it probably pretty safe to assume that gcc is just fine. I suspect the OSG is just fine as well. The most likely candidate for a problem is the ATI driver, something under OpenGL, especially under Linux has a poor track record. So I'd suggest checking ATI support forums, and filing a big report with ATI.
