I would have thought that it's mainly Windows users that really need binaries, given the hard time that they have with getting all the dependencies together. The unix world has a bit of easy time so packaging is less critical. This is just a broad sweeping brush though... In terms of packages for each platform, I think if you and the projects you are associated with need a binary package to help with distribution of your applications/libraries then you have the "itch to scratch". If you have this need then you also will have the motivation to get the packaging right on your platform, as otherwise the errors come back right to you. For this reason I feel doing stuff that helps yourself directly, rather than just for the greater good actually produces more reliable results.
