--terrain will soon be the dafault for VirtualPlanetBuilder. When you output to a .ive then both the height fields and the texture will be stored together, when you select .osg as ouput the height fields will be stored in the .osg files, and the textures as external imagery tiles. As to why you aren't see a texture I cannot say. You really don't provide enough information to even guess what might be up.
