Cal3D and Replicant use Cal3D exporters for 3DS Max, Blender or Maya (not sure about that one). The animations are exported in Cal3D specific format and then Cal3D will animate your model. It works OK, however, I am not sure what is the current status of the Max exporters. They need to be recompiled for every new version of Max. Cal3D is a stable but dormant project, so you may not find a binary for your version and may need to build one yourself. The Blender exporters should work (they are just Python scripts), but I didn't test them lately.
