Then why not looking at the osgterrain example source ? It should give you at least the first step to go... What is the file format of your heightmap ? If you have a DEM or any other "standard" heightmap format, I think you can even go with osgviewer using the --dem flag. Osg is relaying on GDAL project for osgterrain so you need to have it otherwise you'll have an error like not supported format...
